Navigating the layers of responsible business conduct

Substrata helps companies and institutions make sense of the regulations, standards, and expectations on human rights, labor, and the environment that apply to them and respond in a way that fits their size, resources, and risks.

The landscape

The complex landscape of responsible business conduct

Responsible business conduct is shaped by multiple, overlapping layers of responsibility. They evolve at different speeds and reach well beyond the legal function.

  • Binding law. Swiss and EU due diligence and reporting rules, and national laws in partner countries.

  • International standards. The UN Guiding Principles, the OECD Guidelines and ILO standards.

  • Market expectations. Customer requirements, investor criteria, ratings and certification schemes.

  • Reporting frameworks. GRI, ESRS and other frameworks for disclosure.

  • Stakeholder expectations. Affected communities, workers, consumers and civil society.

The approach

How the layers are configured and what they mean for each organization

These layers combine differently for every organization. My role is to clarify what this combination means for a given organization and how it can be navigated.

Three depths of engagement

Engagements are offered at three depths. Each stands on its own, and organizations can begin with any of them.

I founded Substrata to help companies and institutions navigate the layers of responsibility that shape their conduct.

Let’s talk

Each collaboration begins with a complimentary introductory briefing.

In 45 minutes, we look together at the layers of responsibility that matter most for the organization and discuss how we might work together.
